This arrangement is typical of the full ensemble writing of Stan Kenton. His large sound was unique among big bands. The thick writing using counterpoint was one reason for the full sound associated with Kenton. The changes in tempo and texture gives makes this music more suitable for concerts than dancing. In the 1940s, this band gave birth to a new highly developed sound unique to both the black and white jazz traditions.
